What do I need to do if I have an accident on my way to work?

If you have an accident on your way to work or on your way home from work, this is called a commuting accident. In this case, you are protected by the statutory accident insurance.

Here’s what you should know:

· A commuting accident can happen quickly and unexpectedly. For example, if you slip, are involved in a traffic accident, or fall.

· Statutory accident insurance protects you not only at the workplace but also on your commute to and from work.

· Inform your supervisor or the HR department. They will assist you and report the accident.

· A commuting accident only counts as such if you take the direct route to work or home. Minor detours are permitted—for example, if you take your child to daycare.

· Trauma surgeons (Durchgangsärzte) are responsible for work-related and commuting accidents. Your employer will tell you where you can go.
