What do I need to do if I have an accident at work?

If you have an accident at work, this is called an occupational accident. If you are injured in the process, you are protected by the statutory accident insurance.

You should know this:

· An occupational accident happens unexpectedly – for example, slipping, falling, or injuring yourself on a machine.

· The accident is only considered an occupational accident if it occurs during your work or while you are performing a work task.

· If you have an accident on the “direct” route to or from work, this is often also considered an occupational accident – known as a commuting accident.

· You must report the accident immediately. Inform your supervisor right away. This way, they can report the accident and you will receive support.

· You must go to the authorized doctor. This is a doctor who specializes in occupational accidents. Your company will inform you where you can go.

You can find more information here:

DGUV – “What is an occupational accident?”:

The DGUV explains simply when an accident is considered an occupational accident.

BMAS – Statutory accident insurance:

The BMAS informs you about how accident insurance protects you in the event of occupational accidents.
