BEM conversation – what is it and how does it help you?

A BEM conversation is an offer from your employer if you have been sick for a long time or frequently. „BEM“ stands for Occupational Reintegration Management. The goal is for you to stay healthy and be able to work at your workplace on a permanent basis. The conversation is voluntary and helps you find solutions together that support your work and health.

You should know this:

  • BEM is offered if you have been sick for more than six weeks within a year.
  • You decide for yourself whether you want to participate. The conversation is voluntary.
  • In the BEM conversation, you discuss together, possibly with the works council or personnel council, how you can return to work in a healthy manner.
  • It is checked which support or adjustments at the workplace can help you to prevent further long absences.

Do I have to participate?

No. You decide for yourself whether you want to participate in the BEM conversation. A refusal does not bring any disadvantages.

Do I have disadvantages if I go?

No. The BEM serves your protection. Your health data is treated confidentially. Participation must not have any disadvantages for you.

How does the conversation help me?

  • You receive support so that you can return to work in a healthy manner.
  • Working conditions can be adjusted or aids provided that improve your health and work situation.
  • BEM helps to prevent further long absences and to secure your workplace.
